On Tuesday the 8th of September, CIFAL Flanders welcomed Alex Mejia, the director of the CIFAL Global Network and manager of the UNITAR Decentralized Cooperation Programme.
The event took place in the magnificent 16th century mansion Huis Happaert in the heart of the historical centre of Antwerp. For a small crowd of both partners and distinguished guests, Peter Wollaert, General Manager of Antwerp ITCCO, opened the evening with an overview of the mission operation and vision of Antwerp ITCCO.
Next up was Prof. Dr. Hans Verboven of the University of Antwerp who, as partner of Antwerp-ITCCO and newest member of the Board of Directors, had the honour of welcoming Mr. Mejia to Antwerp. Professor Verboven praised the work Antwerp-ITCCO has done in the past two years, and argued that because of the enthusiasm the team has shown , he is certain CIFAL Flanders will continue to grow and increase its impact.
Afterwards the floor was given to our honorary guest Alex Mejia, who congratulated Antwerp-ITCCO with its efforts and said he is very pleased to welcome the organisation to the CIFAL-network. Mr. Mejia highlighted the importance of UNITAR within the global UN system, and explained how in order to achieve the sustainable development goals, there is a need for a stable and long-term commitment and partnership between both the public and private sector. Afterwards, there was still some time for a Q&A with Mr. Mejia, and a tour of the beautiful historical building of Huis Happaert.
